INSIGHT: Antimicrobial Treatments in Building Products
Recently the market has seen a barrage of new products touting "antimicrobial" treatments. Antimicrobial treatments are becoming mainstream in products such as furniture, decorative surfaces, hardware, textiles, paints, sealants, plastics and coatings. Lack of understanding, however, about product effectiveness has left the door open for commercial users and consumers alike to be misled by vague or unproven marketing claims, especially as we all struggle to sort out truth versus fiction regarding the COVID 19 pandemic.
To provide a framework to help architects and designers make informed decisions about specifying appropriate antimicrobial products without creating a false sense of security, the firm of Perkins and Will, in collaboration with Healthy Building Network (HBN), has published a report called "Understanding Antimicrobial Ingredients in Building Materials."
